FAQ

  • What is the best way to store my tortillas?
As Caramelo tortillas contain no preservatives, they should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer upon arrival. That said, our friends at the Kansas State Food Science Institute ran extensive tests for food safety and shelf life, and found that the tortillas can sit at room temperature for several days without being compromised. So, we can ship them to your door and you can pop them in the fridge or freezer when you get them.
  • Can you freeze Caramelo tortillas?
Yes! Our tortillas can be frozen and many customers and markets do freeze them. They’ll last a good three months in the freezer, though there are some in our own freezer now vying for a longer record. For best results, let the tortillas defrost completely in the refrigerator and heat them in a dry pan on the stove before serving.
  • What is the shelf life/expiration of the tortillas?
On every bag of Caramelo tortillas you will find a “Best if used by” date. This date is three weeks from the “Julian Date”, or the date that corresponds to the day of the year the tortillas were actually made. Fun fact: Our son’s name is Julian so we’re getting fancy for him. We’re not that cool. It’s just the day we make the tortillas, people. We stamp the “Best if used by” date three weeks out as that’s what the smart folks at the Kansas State Food Science Institute say is optimal for freshness. Be sure to store them in the fridge or freezer.
  • Allergies & Ingredients
Our tortillas contain wheat and may contain traces of soy. Unfortunately we can’t be absolutely certain there are no traces of peanuts or tree nuts since we source our ingredients from mills and butchers, some of whom also produce or sell products that might contain nuts. Bottom line, we always recommend you consult with your doctor before eating products that may contain allergens. Here are the ingredients in our tortillas: Pork Fat: Unbleached wheat flour, pork fat, water, sea salt Duck Fat: Unbleached wheat flour, duck fat, water, sea salt Avocado Oil: Unbleached wheat flour, avocado oil, water, sea salt
  • Are your tortillas organic?
Our tortillas are currently not certified organic, but they are certified awesome. We do try to source only the highest quality ingredients like pork and duck fat from humanely raised animals, and non-GMO avocado oil made in the USA.
  • How do I prepare Caramelo tortillas?
Preparation is simple. Finish tortillas in a dry pan, griddle, or grill on high heat for about 8-10 seconds on each side or until they puff up. Get them as crispy as you’d like by adjusting the time you heat them. You could also use a microwave, but it’s not our favorite. Then fill with whatever ingredients strike your fancy or just gobble them down plain a few at a time. We won’t tell.
  • Do you ship?
Yes! In the continental US, as well as Alaska and Hawaii, you can order tortillas online and have them shipped right to your door. We do not ship internationally at this time. You can find more information in our Shipping & Returns section.
  • When will my tortillas arrive?
It all depends on how high demand is. Please check the lead time notice on the product page.
